More Features

As of 21 August 2023, a new tachograph has been introduced: the smart tacho 2. All newly registered vehicles with the RDW must have this smart tacho 2. Internationally operating vehicles with an analogue, digital, or smart tacho 1 tachograph must have their tachograph replaced (also known as the retrofit). The smart tacho 2 records more information than older tachograph models, such as data from the new loading and unloading function. This additional information cannot be stored on an old driver card, as it does not have the capacity for it. That is why a new driver card for drivers is being introduced alongside the smart tacho 2.

Driver Cards

The new driver card is called G2V2. The ‘G’ stands for generation and the ‘V’ for version. G2 indicates that it is the second-generation tachograph, and V2 stands for version 2. G2V2 is therefore for the smart tacho 2. Overview of all driver cards:

  • G1V1 – Digital tachograph generation 1, version 1
  • G1V2 – Digital tachograph generation 1, version 2
  • G1V3 – Digital tachograph generation 1, version 3
  • G2V1 – Digital tachograph generation 2, version 1 (Smart Tacho 1)
  • G2V2 – Digital tachograph generation 2, version 2 (Smart Tacho 2)

New Data

The G2V2 driver card can store more data than previous driver cards. The new data that the G2V2 can store includes:

  • Automatic registration of the country code at border crossings
  • The load type: passengers, goods, or undefined
  • New loading and unloading function: loading, unloading, or loading and unloading
  • Vehicle position based on GNSS

If you have a smart tacho 2, you can still use your old driver card. The new data will not be stored on the old driver card (C-files), but it will be stored on the tachograph itself (M-files).

Identifying Your Driver Card

Since different data is stored on different driver cards, it is useful to know which driver card you have. Changes compared to older cards include:

  • On G2 cards, ‘G2’ is printed below the profile photo; on G1 cards, nothing appears there.
  • The signature field has been optional since G2V1.
  • There is no visual difference between the G2V1 and the G2V2.
  • The background of the driver card changed with the G2, although many countries kept it the same for the G2V1 card.
  • Many countries use the same layout and have only added ‘G2’.
