The Phase-Out of 2G and 3G Networks

Learn everything about the consequences of phasing out 2G and 3G networks

The outdated 2G and 3G technologies are gradually being phased out to make way for faster and more advanced 4G and 5G networks. This transition has implications for both consumers and businesses that still rely on older equipment.

Phase-Out Timeline

The phase-out of 2G and 3G networks is not happening simultaneously across all countries and providers. It may seem counterintuitive, but the 3G network will generally be switched off before the 2G network. This is mainly because many business solutions currently still rely on the 2G network.

In the Netherlands:

  • 2G network: Will be switched off from 2025 onwards.
  • 3G network: Partially being shut down from 2024 onwards.

In Belgium:

  • 2G network: Will remain in use until at least the end of 2028.
  • 3G network: Will be fully switched off during 2025.

Consequences for Users

This change has several implications:

  1. Older devices: Devices that only support 2G and 3G connectivity will no longer have access to mobile networks.
  2. Reduced functionality: Some devices that also support 2G may fall back to it, resulting in slower internet connections.

Benefits of the Transition

The switch to new network technologies brings several advantages:

  • Improved performance: 4G and 5G offer faster data speeds and better coverage.
  • Cost efficiency: Maintaining newer networks is more cost-effective for mobile operators.
  • Innovation: The freed-up frequencies can be used for innovative applications and services.

What Does This Mean for Roadsoft Customers?

If you use the remote automatic reading of vehicles and are not yet using our DigiDL-H(x) units, the hardware does not support 4G or 5G. This means it will become increasingly difficult to establish and maintain a reliable connection. Eventually, the vehicle will no longer be able to connect at all.

To get ahead of this, it will be necessary to make the switch to the new hardware that does support these networks.
